Privacy Policy

Effective July 31, 2026 (updated to describe email confirmation for supporter sign-ups and reviewed public supporter listings; prior versions effective June 8, 2026 and April 30, 2026)

Who we are

This privacy policy applies to two affiliated California nonprofit corporations and the websites they operate:

  • The Right to Honest Governance Institute, a California nonprofit public benefit corporation (EIN 41-4546412) organized and operated under section 501(c)(3) as an educational and research organization; federal tax-exempt recognition application in preparation.
  • The Right to Honest Government Action, a California nonprofit mutual benefit corporation (EIN 41-4784643) operating as a 501(c)(4) social welfare organization.

A current mailing address for either entity is provided on written request to the contact addresses below. The entities keep their public contact channels separate from the staff and contractor home addresses used for internal operations.

Each entity is the data controller for personal information collected in connection with its own activities. The entities keep their data separated to the extent practical and do not commingle donor records.

Information we collect

We collect the information you choose to provide, including your name, email address, postal address (if provided), phone number (if provided), survey responses, contact-form messages, donation and payment details (handled by our payment processor — see below), and donor or pledge interest.

We also collect basic technical information such as IP address, browser, device type, referral source, and page activity to protect the site, prevent abuse, fulfill our legal obligations, and understand what is working.

How we use information

We use this information to operate the project, respond to messages, manage access links, process donations, prevent spam and duplicate submissions, send acknowledgments and tax receipts, comply with applicable law (including IRS reporting obligations), and improve public-facing materials.

Payments

Donation payments are processed by third-party payment processors (such as Stripe). Card numbers and bank account information are entered directly with the processor and are not stored on our servers. We retain transactional details (name, amount, date, transaction ID) provided by the processor to issue receipts and comply with tax recordkeeping requirements.

Sharing information

We do not sell personal information. We share information with service providers that help us operate the site, including email systems, payment processing, analytics, advertising platforms (campaign site only, see “Analytics and advertising” below), data storage, security, accounting, and legal compliance, in each case under contractual obligations to protect that information.

We may disclose information when legally required (subpoena, court order, regulatory request, IRS filing) or when necessary to protect the rights, property, or safety of the entities, their staff, or the public.

Supporter sign-ups and public listings

When you add your name in support of the campaign statement, we ask for your email address and send a confirmation link; your sign-up is not treated as verified until you click it. We use that address only to confirm your sign-up and to contact you about this campaign, and you can unsubscribe at any time.

Your name is never published automatically. Names appear in any public supporter listing only if you explicitly asked to be listed, your email is confirmed, and a human reviewer has approved the entry. You can ask us to remove your name from a public listing at any time using the contact channels below.

Research and survey data

Survey and research data is governed by the pre-registered research protocol on file at the Open Science Framework (osf.io/br3u2). We publish the combined, de-identified results together with the analysis code used to produce them, so the findings can be independently verified. Any data we release is de-identified, and we keep contact details and technical identifiers private. We may quote short written answers in anonymized form only where the study’s consent told participants we might. For our April 2026 study, the consent did not mention quoting, so we do not quote written answers from it.

Analytics and advertising

Our sites use Google Analytics 4 to measure aggregate traffic (page views, referrer, approximate region, session duration). On the c3 sites (righttohonestgovernance.org and honestgovernmentresearch.org), Google Analytics runs in a cookieless mode by default: no analytics cookies are set unless you affirmatively opt in.

On the c4 campaign site (righttohonestgovernment.org), we also use the Google Ads conversion tag and the Meta (Facebook / Instagram) Pixel so we can measure the effectiveness of paid advertising and reach people who are likely to share our interest in honest-government reform. These tools set cookies and may share limited interaction data with Google and Meta under their respective terms. That interaction data includes whether a visit resulted in someone signing their name, which is how we tell whether an ad reached the right people. It does not include the name, email address, or anything else you typed into a form.

You can opt out of advertising cookies on the campaign site at any time on the Your privacy choices page, linked as “Your privacy choices” in the site footer, or by enabling the Global Privacy Control (GPC) signal in your browser. We honor GPC as an opt-out request. When you opt out we stop loading the Meta Pixel and the Google Ads tag altogether, so no advertising cookies are set and no interaction data is shared. Opting out does not change your ability to use the site.

We do not combine c3 analytics data with c4 advertising data, and we do not use the c3 sites to build advertising audiences.

California privacy rights

California residents have the right to request access to, correction of, or deletion of personal information we hold about them, and to know the categories of personal information we collect, the sources from which it is collected, and the categories of third parties with whom we share it (California Consumer Privacy Act, as amended by the California Privacy Rights Act). On our c3 sites, we do not sell or share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising. On the c4 campaign site, we share limited interaction data with Google and Meta for advertising-attribution purposes, which California treats as “sharing” under the CPRA. The Your privacy choices page is the one-click mechanism to opt out, and it also honors the Global Privacy Control signal.

To exercise any of these rights, contact us using the addresses below. We will respond within the time required by law.

Cookies

We use cookies for essential site functions (session management, security, abuse prevention), basic analytics, and (on the c4 campaign site only) advertising attribution and retargeting. See “Analytics and advertising” above for the c3/c4 split and how to opt out.

Retention

We retain personal information for as long as necessary to fulfill the purposes described in this policy and to comply with our legal obligations (including tax recordkeeping, which generally requires seven years).

Children

Our sites are not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has submitted information, contact us so we can delete it.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. The effective date above will reflect the most recent change. Material changes will be highlighted on the site.
